Have students play EPA Dumptown Game to reduce waste

Lesson Objectives
At the end of activity students will be able to:
- Learn how to use the internet to gather information
- Learn ways to reduce waste
- Learn how different programs to reduce waste impact the community
- Use math to calculate to help make choices on programs for Recycle City
- Identify critical points write a summary
Lesson Activities
- Divide the class into teams.
- Go to EPA on line Dumptown Game: http://www.epa.gov/recyclecity/gameint.htm
- Review instructions before clicking on any programs and have teams choose and write down three programs to reduce waste.
- Teams should click on first selection read the description, gather facts and write down activities to support their selection.
- Check off item and click "done"
- Click on "City Hall" and wand review the impact of their selection recording all tons of waste reduced and costs
- Repeat items 2-6 twice and provide calculate totals.
- Report finding selections, and totals to the class
- Highest reduction and lowest cast win.
- Write a summary on waste reduction tips.

Lesson Activities
- Divide the class into teams.
- Using all sides of the My Green Cube have students select a topic or task to develop demonstrations around the topics of pollution, energy, and waste and ways to reduce their harmful impacts on the environment.
- Create a location and allow teams to share their findings and project informally with other students in their school.
