Event Programming
Develop sustainable programs and events around My Green Cube.
Universities, Communities, Organizations, and Companies can piggyback on existing activities surrounding major college sporting events, community or state fairs, or host a variety of events for one day or over five days focused on environmental awareness, sustainability, and education using My Green Cube. Each side of the cube provides a theme in which events can be tailored around.
Sample One-Day Approach
MY GREEN DIFFERENCE FESTIVAL
Organize a festival creating different zones based on My Green Cube. Use the Reduction Zone as the centerpiece and the remaining zones around Reduction as follows:
REDUCTION ZONE
Celebration of Reduction
Organize a concert or local entertainment with local radio celebrities providing on location broadcasting promoting differences individuals can make through simple choices highlighted around My Green Cube. Organize games around sustainability, individual carbon footprint calculation stations, and posters and charts providing information and alternatives for engaging individuals to reduce waste, energy, and pollution.
Environmental Responsibility Pledging
At central locations in the Reduction Zone and other zones at MY GREEN Difference Festival, have people sign a pledge to commit to becoming environmentally responsible. Increase pledging by giving away MY GREEN CUBES and other prizes related to environmentally-responsible products or actions.
Farmers Market and Food Concessions
Provide a farmers market and food concessions to highlight locally produces products or green/environmentally friendly programs used or offer by food service providers.
EFFICIENCY ZONE
Green Globes or LEED Green Building Rating System Information Table
Provide information on efficiency features included in the construction of new buildings with charts and data highlighting short and long-term performance. Also provide a list of simple actions individuals can participate in to further increase the efficiency of these systems tied to the pledge.
Water Efficiency Information Table
Provide information on ways individuals can use water more efficiently and products that increase water efficiency such as low-flow valves, moisture-sensing irrigation systems, and Energy Star Appliances.
Financing Your Home Efficiencies
Invite companies and/or local agencies to provide information on rebates, tax credits, grants, and loan programs available for weatherizing homes and purchasing high-efficiency heating, air conditioning, and other major appliances. Also provide demonstrations on how to install low-cost upgrades such as programmable thermostats.
Energy-Efficient Light Bulb Exchange
Arrange for an electric supply company or a light bulb manufacturer to exchange energy-efficient bulbs for inefficient light bulbs.
RECYCLING ZONE
Recycling Information and Awareness Stations
Identify sponsors and agencies that provide and manage recycling services. Have them provide demonstrations and information on recycling and the types of items that are recyclable.
Paper Shredding Demonstration
Locate a vendor that recycles shredded paper and see if they have an on-site paper shredding truck service and then invite people to bring in personal documents to be shredded for free and ask the vendor to provide information on how the paper is recycled.
Recycling Programs
Provide information on recycling programs currently in place at your facility or in your community. Develop a list of easy ways that individuals can increase their recycling output and improve overall recycling efforts; tie the list back to the green pledge.
Toner/Ink Cartridge Recycling
Invite vendors that will recycle cartridges for printers and other office equipment; find out about manufacturers that offer recycling programs at stores in your area.
RE-USE ZONE
Composting
Have on-site facilities staff or local vendors demonstrate the different stages of composting and provide information on what items can and cannot be composted.
Re-Use Services & Programs
Assemble organizations from the community looking for donated items. Assemble vendors that have re-useable mug programs or incentives for re-usable bags. Include bag exchange locations to exchange plastic bags for re-useable bags. Provide a table for pledging - highlighting activities individuals can engage in related to re-use.
Purchasing Recycled Products
Invite and showcase vendors that offer recycled products made products with recycled materials as alternatives to common items purchased by individuals. Provide information about the impacts of purchasing recycled products.
On-Site Re-Purposing Programs
Provide information on ways individuals can participate in programs currently in place at your facility or in the community that re-purposes furniture, equipment, and supplies.
TRANSPORTATION ZONE
Environmentally-Friendly Vehicles
Provide information and have examples of some alternative vehicles used to reduce environmental stress. Examples could include golf carts, hybrid vehicles, or vehicles that use bio-diesel fuel.
Alternative Methods of Transportation
Invite companies to provide information about bike sharing, car pooling, and car sharing programs. Also provide information on public transportation programs.
Walking and Biking Tips
Invite local fitness professionals to provide information and demonstrations on walking and biking techniques, equipment selection, and local fitness resources. Also provide information on bike clubs, trails, and fitness activities.
